What began with painting has grown into a body of work shaped by years of exploration, change and experience. Carter Nolden exists to document that journey the work, the process, and what comes next.

Carter Nolden is the creative studio of Roland Carter
Roland Carter is a contemporary artist and the founder of Carter Nolden, the creative studio through which he presents and documents his work.
Painting since 2010, Carter has developed a practice shaped by colour, movement, spirituality and lived experience. Travel — particularly his connection with the Caribbean has become an important influence, bringing a sense of warmth, freedom and energy into his work.
The work begins in the studio. Each original develops through painting, experimentation and time. No two works are repeated.
Carter works intuitively, allowing each painting to evolve through layers, changes and unexpected decisions. Rather than following a fixed formula, he is interested in the point where colour, emotion and experience come together creating work that feels personal without prescribing what the viewer should see.
Over the years, his paintings have found their way into private collections internationally, including Amsterdam, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Aruba, Bern and Boston. In 2023, his work was presented in a solo exhibition at Kunsthandel Peter ter Braak in Groningen.
Carter Nolden grew naturally around the work. What began with painting has become a place to document the wider journey — the studio, the process, exhibitions, past works and the development of new bodies of work.
Today, Carter continues to work from the studio while developing the next chapter of his practice.
