Mike explores the Third Element — an invisible field that exists not as a separate thing, but in the relationships between things. It is the space where forces encounter one another, exchange information, dissolve established boundaries, and reorganize into new forms.

Within the composition, Mother Earth and her Child, Papa Time, and Kompa emerge and recede, appearing as presences concealed within a larger living system. They are not isolated figures but participants in a field of relationships, each influencing and being influenced by what surrounds them.

At the centre of this field appears a green multidimensional being — a presence that seems to occupy several states at once, moving between figure and field, the visible and invisible, the material and immaterial. The title Mike emerged from this figure. Carter’s close friend George Rosell, seeing the green being within the composition, suggested it would be fitting to call him Mike, after Mike Eman. What began as a spontaneous observation became the title of the work, adding a personal and distinctly Aruban layer to its wider metaphysical narrative.

The Third Element can be understood as the hidden architecture of connection: neither purely physical nor entirely mental, neither object nor empty space. It is an active intermediary — a field through which form, memory, energy, intention, and information move. What appears to be empty space becomes generative space, capable of carrying signals, establishing patterns, and allowing one form to affect another without becoming it.

Through layered mark-making, overlapping forms, and shifting visual rhythms, Carter creates a composition that behaves less like a fixed image and more like a living system. Individual elements appear to communicate across the canvas, forming temporary networks and territories. Boundaries become permeable; patterns emerge, disappear, and return in altered states. Identity itself appears distributed across these relationships, suggesting that the intelligence of a system may exist not only within its individual parts, but also within the connections that organize them.

Mother Earth embodies the material and generative ground from which life emerges. Her Child represents continuation and becoming. Papa Time introduces duration, change, and the inevitability of transformation, while Kompa hides within the Third Element — a rhythmic presence sensed through movement and relationship rather than confined to a single visible form.

Mike ultimately proposes a world in which nothing exists entirely alone. Between body and environment, past and future, matter and consciousness, there is another territory — unseen yet active, continuously carrying information, generating relationships, and reorganizing form.

The Third Element is the space between — not emptiness, but relationship; not absence, but possibility.
